The Villages of Mallorca | Blog | Hotel Astoria Playa

The holiday island of Mallorca evokes images of white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, breathtaking views and sunset parties. However, there is another side to Mallorca that is often overlooked, that is the most intimate and traditional face of Mallorca, one that hides some of the prettiest villages to be found in Europe.

The Serra de Tramuntana is where many of these picturesque villages are to be found. Named a World Heritage Site as well as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2011, nestling in the mountain range are some of the most beautiful and charming villages on the island of Mallorca and indeed in the whole of Spain.

Although they do not need any further endorsement, here at the Astoria Playa we would still like to tell you a little bit more about them, just in case you haven’t read about them. Furthermore, we would like to recommend a route that will take you through these beautiful Villages of Mallorca; they are so picturesque we think they’ll make you want to stay forever.

Sóller is quite isolated from the rest of the island of Mallorca. Located in a valley facing the sea, for many years it was only accessible by foot from the rest of the island until a railway was built to link it with Palma. A large number of people of French descent live in Sòller as the locals often did business with France to help them survive and overcome their isolation from the rest of Mallorca. This has given Sóller a slight French vibe to it.

One of the best ways to visit Sóller is by the nostalgic train, an old wooden railway that runs through the town and onto Palma de Mallorca. The village is located in the centre of the Serra de Tramuntana and nowadays is on the central axis for countless routes taken by both hikers and cyclists.

Sóller has its own port called Port de Sóller where you can walk, enjoy a refreshing swim and eat fresh fish in one of its iconic restaurants. In addition, in the highest area around Soller lies, Fornalutx, which was formerly part of Sóller, this village has won multiple awards for being the prettiest village in Spain.
