Hiking in Mallorca

Hiking is a favourite activity of both visitors and residents alike; the hiking trails in Mallorca are a great way to discover the island. The island is famous for its incredible beaches, protected coves and Limestone Mountains that form an unparalleled landscape. Walking through the valleys and mountains, along paths that line the steep coasts or through the pine trees or holm oaks typical of the area, you will discover a unique natural environment, revealing the true beauty of Mallorca.

Hiking in Mallorca has grown in popularity in recent years, between the Serra de Tramuntana and the Serra de Llevant, the two mountain ranges on the island, you will find a wide variety of routes suitable for all levels and ages. You can enjoy gentle walks, more complicated trails to the highest peaks of the island and you can even try the climbing the cliffs and ravines that you will find on the island. In the case of the latter, we always recommend being accompanied by an expert mountain guide who knows the route and will make sure you have all the necessary safety equipment.

In most cases, you don´t need much equipment to go hiking in Mallorca. It is important to always wear suitable shoes and comfortable clothing and carry a bottle with water. It is also advisable, if you are going to visit the island in summer, to avoid the hottest hours of the day and, if possible, protect yourself from the sun when you can, the summer temperatures are very high, although with a bit of organization, enjoying all of the Mallorcan excursions that you have planned during your visit shouldn’t be a problem.

Hiking trails in Mallorca

Mallorca offers hiking trails suitable for all ages and levels, trails through extensive pine forests or along the coastline and trails ending in a hidden beach or cove. The latter are the best routes for the warmer months, with the incentive that, when you arrive at your destination, after passing through some stunning places, you can cool off in the calm waters of the Mediterranean. If you are thinking of doing some excursions in Mallorca, go for it! It will be an experience of a lifetime.

On the island, you will find two mountains ranges, both ideal for hiking in Mallorca. The Serra de Tramuntana is located on the north side of the island and it is where you will find the highest peak in Mallorca, the Puig Major, with an altitude of approx. 1.400 meters. The north coast is very steep, with uneven trails and incredible landscapes with the sea in the background. In the east is the Serra de Llevant, not as high in terms of altitude but just as impressive. On this hillside of up to 500 meters, you will find countless hill walking routes and many of the most spectacular Mallorca excursions. In both areas it is easy to find circular hiking routes, which give you the chance, during your holidays in Mallorca, to explore all the different areas of the island without having to retrace your steps and avoid visiting the same spot twice.

Cycling routes Mallorca

Two of the spectacular cycling tours are first, the route to Cap de Formentor, which takes you to the end of a small peninsula with a beautiful lighthouse and second, the Sa Costera road in the Serra de Tramuntana. The latter route spans more than 100 kilometres (although you can do it in sections without problems) it travels along the west coast and links the towns of Pollenca and Andratx, passing the highest point of Mallorca, the Puig Major. This 13-kilometre stretch has more than 800 meters of positive elevation and a gradient of more than 6%, so it is only recommended for expert cyclists.
