Mallorca’s Beaches

If you have visited Mallorca before, you will know that it has beaches to suit all tastes, from family beaches with amenities to secluded coves that are accessible only by expert hikers.

But Mallorca’s speciality is the picture-perfect sandy beach, with turquoise blue crystal-clear waters and a long shallow shoreline. This is all thanks to the Posidonia meadows of seagrass that lie in the shallows just below the surface.

Due to the sheer number and variety of beaches, it is almost impossible to list the best ones in Mallorca, because, after all, in our opinion, they are all spectacular.

If you plan on staying at our hotel, the Astoria Playa, we would like to take the opportunity to recommend some of the best beaches in Mallorca that are within the local area. These beaches are world-renowned and can be found in countless travel blogs. Do you want to know which ones they are? Well, read on!

Our hotel The Astoria Playa is very close to Playa de Alcúdia, an amazing resort located near the world-famous Serra de Tramuntana Mountain range. Alcúdia itself is a beautiful town in the north of the island, its streets, but more importantly, its walls, breathe history. If you come to Alcúdia, we recommend you visit the Moll gate, the church of Sant Jaime, the Mallorca gate and, of course, those famous walls.

We also recommend visiting the S'Albufera nature reserve, where you can see a wide variety of our unique native flora and fauna.

But what we would like to talk to you about is Mallorca’s beaches, specifically the best beaches in Mallorca that are close to our hotel, the Astoria Playa.

Playa de Muro Beach

Trust us, it’s not us saying this lightly, but according to countless visitors, Playa de Muro is one of the best beaches in Europe, and the best news is that it is only 9 minutes away from our hotel, The Astoria Playa!

Muro beach is 7 kilometres long and is divided into 4 sectors: Sectors I and II, and Sectors Es Comú and Ses Casetes des Capellans.

In Sectors I and II, while you take a stroll, you can take iconic photos of the small craft moored at the jetties. These narrow walkways stretch out into the sea, from where you can watch the marvellous sunsets or take a boat trip around the bay. It is also in these two sectors where you will find the greatest number of local amenities: hotels, restaurants, beach clubs, sailing schools, etc. This includes places with guaranteed accessibility for the disabled, as well as sun loungers, parasols, and public toilets.

In addition, in Sector I, you will find a Hi-point, a world-pioneering technology for the prevention of skin cancer. At the Hi-point, depending on the solar radiation and the colour of your skin, eyes and hair, you will be able to find out the minimum sun protection factor you need to use on a particular day.

The Es Comú Sector of Playa de Muro is designated a natural park, it is an area of unspoilt natural beauty it is completely undeveloped, so no buildings and therefore also no amenities. The Es Comú Sector is a protected dune area. If you visit this sector, please do not leave the walkways that have been set up to give access to the beach, this is to prevent damage and avoid subsequent deterioration of the precious dune environment. In this area, you can see a wide variety of local wildlife, and, depending on the season of the year you will see different flowers, birds, and plants.

Finally, at the other end of the beach is Ses Casetes Des Capellans or, more simply known as, Es Capellans. Here you will find around 140 small huts that have been handed down from one generation of beach lovers to the next; it is a corner full of history. At this end of the beach, you will once again find a reasonable range of amenities available.

Formentor Beach

The beach of Formentor, located in an idyllic spot in the bay of Pollença on the peninsula of the same name, is the place where the world-famous Serra de Tramuntana begins. It is one of the best-known beaches in Mallorca, combining beauty with the comfort of a popular beach as well as fine white sand and those crystal clear turquoise blue waters that are typical of the Mediterranean. It is surrounded by woods where you can have a picnic or simply take shelter after sunbathing. From Formentor, you can also enjoy spectacular views of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains.

Formentor beach is approximately 1 kilometre long and is easy to access, there is a car park near the beach. During the summer, the beach has all the usual services available: lifeguards, showers, sun loungers and parasol rental.

If you like water sports there is swimming, and snorkelling, you can go paddle surfing, windsurfing, canoeing, or hire pedal boats or jet skis.

Cala Figuera

Near Formentor beach, just a mere 5 kilometres away from our hotel, you will find Cala Figuera. Why not try to visit both beaches on the same day? Cala Figuera, in addition to its crystal-clear waters and beautiful views of the cliffs, is an unspoilt and captivating setting that will leave an everlasting picture etched on your memory. Never developed and completely untouched, the beach has no services or parking area, so you will have to leave your car on the side of the road and walk for approximately 20 minutes. But the peace, tranquillity and the views are all worth it!

Sant Joan beach

Maybe you fancy a sandy beach, a bit less crowded but you still want it to be welcoming, even if it is a bit less popular? In this case, we would like to recommend the beach of Sant Joan. Located in the municipality of Alcúdia, in the bay of Pollença, it is a sandy beach, not too wide and about 200 metres long with easy access. It is an excellent beach for those who are not so confident in the water, perfect for families, it is shallow and typically has very calm waters. And, thanks to its crystalline clear waters, from the beach, you can see the underwater flora and fauna in all its stunning beauty.

The beach of Sant Joan has a wonderful backdrop of greenery and what’s more? There are stunning views of the Cape of Formentor in the distance.
